A project called "colleague.skill" is spreading among Chinese workplaces. This is an AI tool that uses an employee's digital traces such as chat history, emails, documents along with descriptions in prompts to create an AI agent with similar skills.
"Colleague.skill" is shared for free on GitHub by a Chinese person with the nickname titanwings. In early April, the project received 2,000 stars on Github, similar to the like button on social networks. By April 9, this number reached nearly 11,000.
The described project helps people complete the tasks left by colleagues or partners who quit, or helps employees easily take over from their predecessors. However, some worry that the tool could be used by "bosses" to create AI Agents to replace the workforce, in the context of many Chinese companies requiring employees to save work details, from work processes, decision making to communication processes.
"Colleague.skill" raises concerns because it can create a digital copy of a person at work without permission. On Chinese social media, this is called "skill distillation".
